Eurobeat was first used in the UK when Ian Levines Eastbound Expressway released their single Youre a Beat in recognition to the slower tempo of Hi-NRG music emerging from Europe. Many European acts managed to break through under this new recognition, namely the likes of Modern Talking, Bad Boys Blue, Taffy, and Spagna. Euro disco derivatives generally include Europop and Eurodance, with the most prominent subgenres being space disco of the late and Italo disco. Euro disco is largely an offshoot of contemporary American music trends going far back to the early times of jazz, rock, soul, funk and disco.
Italo disco evolved from the then-current dance music and developed into a diverse genre. The genre employed drum machines, synthesizers, and occasionally vocoders and was usually sung in English, and to a lesser extent, in Spanish as well.
