This Is How We Do It Montell Jordan’s era defining debut single, sat atop the US Billboard Chart for a monumental seven weeks when it was released in 1995, and subsequently went on to become arguably the biggest old school R&B party anthem of all time.
Almost ten years prior to the release of ‘This Is How We Do It’ though, the New Jack Swing genre – which originated from the mid-80s New York club scene, emerged as a fusion of Hip-Hop, R&B and Jazz music. Spearheaded by Grammy winning artist and producer, Teddy Riley – who went on from Guy to forming R&B supergroup Blackstreet – it spawned a trailblazing subculture which dominated urban youth culture on both sides of the Atlantic; championing the likes of Bobby Brown, En Vogue, Jodeci, Mary J. Blige, Keith Sweat, Horace Brown, Jade as well as the UK’s Mark Morrison and Beverly Knight to name a few.
A hybrid of the smooth sounds of 70s Soul and testosterone fuelled 80s Hip-Hop – this new sound produced a myriad of radio hits which had all the cool cats and fly girls flocking to cop the latest cuts from their local record stores. As the genre continued to grow during the late 80s and early 90s, New Jack Swing’s magnetic influence started to infiltrate the world of film, fashion and television (think everything from ‘House Party’ to ‘The Fresh Prince Of Bel Air’) – encapsulating the zeitgeist for future generations to draw inspiration from for years to come.
