NOW Merry Christmas was first released last year with a track list that was all over the place. Essentially, it is a compilation with a few tracks by modern-day artists mixed in with a few "classic" Christmas songs. It more or less seemed like a truncated version of 2008's The Essential NOW That's What I Call Christmas (which was, itself, a truncated compilation of previous NOW Christmas compilations with a few then-modern day artists).
Here we are one year later, and instead of NOW releasing a new compilation, they have decided to quietly re-release last year's mediocre NOW Merry Christmas. Josh Groban's "I'll Be Home For Christmas" has been replaced with Ariana Grande's "Winter Things", and the original version of Elvis Presley's "Blue Christmas" has been replaced with a new '2017 Mix' which features the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. Also cut from the 2016 release are Bobby Helms' "Jingle Bell Rock" and George Winston's "Carol of the Bells". Their absence has been filled in by The Jackson 5's "Santa Claus is Coming to Town" and The Temptations' rendition of "Silent Night".
It seems as if the only real reason to get this re-release is for Ariana Grande's "Winter Things", which has never been issued on disc before in the US. Elvis' new version of "Blue Christmas" is featured on his recently-released Christmas compilation with The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Jackson 5 and Temptations tracks have been featured on previous NOW Christmas compilations, notably The Essential NOW Christmas.
